Do you love the cozy atmosphere that a scented candle creates in your home? If so, you’re not alone! However, along with the popularity of candles, come a number of myths and misconceptions that can ruin your experience. That’s why I want to dispel the most common myths about scented candles so you can feel confident in your choice and enjoy these wonderful home decor items without any hesitation.

1. Myth: Scented candles are bad for your health

This is one of the most common myths. However, the truth is that high-quality scented candles made with natural ingredients, such as 100% soy wax or beeswax, are safe to use. They do not emit harmful toxins or chemicals when burned that could be released into the air. However, it is important to know that not all candles are created equal. Some low-quality candles made with paraffin wax can actually emit harmful compounds. For this reason, it is very important to choose candles made with real, natural wax, rather than cheaper blends.

2. Myth: Burning a candle in short intervals will make it last longer

It makes sense that you want your candle to last as long as possible, but burning it in short bursts can have the opposite effect. When you light a candle, a so-called “melt pool” forms on its surface, which serves as fuel for the flame. If you do not allow this melt pool to reach the edges of the container, a “tunnel” will form, with unused wax in the middle, or in other words, a thick layer of unburned wax will remain on the walls of the candle container. To make your candle burn longer, it is recommended to allow the melt pool to fully form, which can take about 2-3 hours.

3. Myth: The scent comes from the candle wick

While this is a common belief, the truth is a little more complicated. Scented candles are made by combining essential oils with wax at high temperatures. When the candle is lit, the wick heats this mixture of wax and oil, which melts and releases the scent into the air. So, it’s not just the wick that contributes to the aroma, but the entire melting surface of the candle. The larger the melting surface, the stronger the scent!

4. Myth: Soy wax is inferior to other waxes

This myth needs to be explained. I have found a lot of information online that says that soy candles are inferior to other types of wax, but in fact their quality depends on many factors, such as the quality of the wax, the wick, the choice of fragrance and the design. Soy candles have many advantages: they are made from a renewable and sustainable source - soybean oil, which is why they are an environmentally friendly choice. They are also biodegradable and emit less soot when burned. Another advantage is that soy candles burn at a lower temperature, so they burn longer and emit a fragrance for a longer period of time.

5. Myth: Scented candles are only for home fragrance

Not really! While scented candles do make your home smell amazing, they also create a cozy and peaceful atmosphere. The flickering flame of a candle provides the perfect setting for relaxation, time to yourself, allowing you to unwind after a long day. In addition, scented candles can be a great home decor item, adding elegance and charm to any room. So, don’t limit yourself to just scents – candles can do so much more.

6. Myth: All scented candles are the same

Far from it! While it may seem that all scented candles are the same, in fact, their quality, craftsmanship and fragrance intensity can vary greatly. The highest quality scented candles are made from natural ingredients and are meticulously handcrafted, ensuring a clean, long-lasting and authentic aroma sensation. In contrast, cheap mass-produced candles often contain paraffin wax or are not made from pure soy wax, for example, most mass-produced candles mix soy wax with paraffin, thus reducing the cost of the candle and being able to offer the buyer a better price for the candle. Mass-produced candles often use low-quality fragrance oils and lead-core wicks, which emit black soot when burning or can even cause headaches. So, choose wisely and don’t be fooled by the cheap price.

7. Myth: Scented candles are expensive

Although high-quality scented candles may cost more, they are definitely worth every penny. As I mentioned earlier, more natural ingredients and high-quality craftsmanship ensure a longer burn time, a cleaner burn, and a flawless scent.
